Our Founder
Our founder is Ashley Giles MBE, the former English first-class cricketer who played 54 test matches and 62 one day internationals for England.
He spent his 14-year, first-class career at Warwickshire County Cricket Club and was awarded an MBE in the 2006 New Year’s Honours list for his role in the successful Ashes winning squad in 2005.
Ashley met and married Stine (née Osland) and they have two children, Anders and Tilly. The family lives in Droitwich Spa, where he was named an Honorary Citizen of the Town by the Mayor after the 2005 Ashes success.
In 2012, Stine was treated with a pioneering, life-changing piece of equipment, called a TomoTherapy machine, Ashley and Stine made it their mission to raise awareness about the urgent need for further research into brain tumours and to fund much-needed equipment.
After successful treatment for her brain tumours, Stine wanted to give back and in 2015 Ashley and Stine set up the Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund.
With only 3% of all cancer research funds raised allocated to brain tumour research, they are determined to do as much as they can to help redress the balance – and ultimately save more lives.
Since the charity was founded, they have raised more than £1 million, but they urgently need to raise more money to fund further research, to purchase much needed equipment and to continue to provide support for brain tumour patients and their families.
Ashley and Stine are determined to grow the charity and to make a positive difference. By appointing fundraiser Karen Jones who is supported by a committee whose visions are aligned, the future of the charity looks bright.
Our Team
The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund committee comprises a group of women with the same vision.
Every member has touched Stine’s life in one way or another, from lifelong friends to friends from the world of cricket and loyal supporters of the charity.
Stine has personally invited each member to join the committee, recognising their shared values, work ethic and professionalism, as well as their energy and passion to drive forward the charity’s aims.
All committee members take their responsibilities seriously and each places good governance at the centre of their work.
The charity also employs fundraiser Karen Jones who works directly alongside the committee to ensure that their vision for the future is continued.
Stine’s vision is to raise as much money as possible for brain tumour research, much-needed equipment, and support for brain tumour patients and their families.
To that end, the team works hard to deliver a host of first-class events that reflect the interests of the charity’s many supporters.
Stine is proud of her team who work closely with medical experts to ensure that money raised is directed to areas that will make the most difference in this grossly underfunded area.
If you would like to support our fundraising events, or even hold your own activities, we would love to hear from you. If you are interested in fundraising for the Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund please get in touch using our contact form.

The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund was set up in 2015 by England cricketer Ashley Giles and his wife, Stine, to raise money to fund vital brain tumour research at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB).
The Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund
Since 2006, Stine has undergone three lots of treatment to remove four brain tumours at QEHB and she continues to receive superlative support from the brilliant team at this world-class hospital.
The Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund
Since 2015, The Giles’ Trust has raised more than £1 million for brain tumour research, including contributions towards the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Project, which provides doctors with greater, more accurate information when assessing a patient.
The Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund
In the UK, brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40. Every year, over 11,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour – that’s over 30 people every day.
The Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund
Only 12 out of every 100 patients diagnosed with a primary brain tumour survive 10 years or more.
The Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund
Brain tumour research is significantly underfunded: while more than £500 million is spent on cancer research every year in the UK, under 3% goes towards brain tumour research.
The Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund
The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund is already making a difference: it is funding brain tumour research, vital equipment and providing support for brain tumour patients. This is just the beginning of its vision for the future.
About Us
The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund was born out of a determination to help fund one of the most under-funded areas of cancer research in the UK.
In 2006, England cricketer Ashley Giles rushed back from Australia, where he had been part of the Ashes team, to be with his wife, Stine, who had been diagnosed with a brain tumour. She underwent treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), but six years later, another two tumours were found and she became one of the first people in the country to be treated by the TomoTherapy machine. Without this revolutionary piece of equipment, treatment options were limited, but she promised that if her treatment went well and her prognosis was good, she would dedicate herself to raising money to help brain tumour research. The pioneering therapy worked and three years later, in 2015 she and Ashley launched the charity.
Brain tumour research remains a central aim of the charity and it also proudly funds other research projects. In 2018, Stine was diagnosed with another tumour that required immediate treatment – and thanks to the world-class experts at QEHB, her outcome was positive. She remains under the care of her team of clinicians, yet continues to focus on fundraising efforts to help them in their research.
Since 2015, when The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund was launched, it has raised more than £1 million and it has also successfully lobbied the NHS to fund an additional research nurse at the hospital. The charity continues to grow in strength and has recently invested in Artificial Intelligence, a Surgical Navigational System and a Nexstim Brain Scanner. With your help we can continue to raise vital funds for further research, much-needed equipment and support for brain tumour patients.
As a charity, we rely on the generosity of our supporters. And we urgently need your help. Without you, we cannot provide funding for brain tumour research, we cannot provide investment into pioneering equipment and we cannot go over and above to ensure the provision of additional much-needed resources, ensuring support of our brain tumour patients and their families.
Our fundraising also allows us to invest in pioneering equipment. Since 2015, we have funded a full-time research nurse at the University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), which is revolutionising the availability and delivery of clinical research in neuro-oncology at the hospital. This role is having such a positive impact on brain tumour research that we successfully lobbied the NHS to fund a second research nurse post. Every day, their work is helping patients to access innovative and new therapies, as well as national and international trials.
Can you help us to raise funds? Since the Trust was launched in 2015, we have raised more than £1 million through a host of high-profile events, such as our popular annual Ball, golf days, fun days and much more. Our supporters have also hosted other events, such as coffee mornings, fashion shows and even climbed mountains for us.
We still need to raise thousands of pounds to provide cutting-edge equipment, research nurses and indispensable support for brain tumour patients like Stine and their families.
What can you do?
We are planning many exciting fundraisers, please visit our website for regular updates. Or contact our fundraiser, Karen Jones and she will be happy to help. If you are looking to hold a fundraising event then please visit our JustGiving page.
Can we advertise your fundraising on our website or promote it on our social media? Please get in touch and let’s discuss this further. Perhaps your organisation or business would like to make us your charity of the year? Contact our team and they will help you plan the year ahead.
Please dig deep and help us continue with our mission. Together, we want to make a difference. Together, we can save more lives, targeting brain tumours together.
Since the Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund was established in 2015, we have raised more than £1 million. As a charity we operate in the medical research sector, working closely with frontline specialists, consultants and clinicians. This helps us to target our funding to where it is needed most:
“The impact from the Giles’ Trust at University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) has been incredible. The contribution from the charity has significantly impacted on the delivery of the highest standard of care in this patient group. The benefits of the Giles’ Trust donations have been felt by patients and staff.” Dr Sara Meade. Oncology Consultant, University Hospitals Birmingham.
Research Nurses
We are proud to fund a full-time research nurse post, which is helping to transform clinical research in neuro-oncology at the University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). As a result, we have also successfully lobbied the NHS to fund a second research nurse post.
Dr Sara Meade, a senior oncologist we work with, recognises the crucial role of these research posts, saying: “The funding of a full-time neuro-oncology research nurse has revolutionised the availability and delivery of clinical research in neuro-oncology at UHB.”
Further investment
The Giles' Trust Brain Tumour Fund has also recently appointed a research radiographer and a paediatric radiographer.
Surgical Navigation System
We invested a six-figure sum in a surgical navigation system that allows careful and precise planning of surgery through the complex pathways of the brain. This means so much to patients and their after-care and recovery.Specifically, targeted surgery disrupts only a minimal amount of brain tissue, significantly reducing any chances of surgical complications. Furthermore, with precise localisation, the time under anaesthetic is kept to a minimum as our surgeons know precisely where to operate and the surgical path is pre-planned, allowing detailed discussions with patients. These clear advantages translate into dramatically improved patient outcomes and more rapid return to normal life following surgery.
Nexstim Brain Scanner
We have purchased a Nexstim Brain Scanner offering targeted and effective diagnostics for brain tumour patients. Nixstim can confirm whether there is the possibility of surgery for patients that were initially deemed inoperable because of inaccessibilty to their brain tumour.
Artificial Intelligence
We have also invested in Artificial Intelligence this can serve to enhance the performace of surgeons in neuro surgery. Artificial Intelligence can also predict prognosis and also identify and recommend post-operative care more accurately.
Our funds have also contributed towards:
• Medical equipment
• Nurses’ and staff training
• Patient welfare
• Staff welfare
We are proud of what we have achieved, but we are committed to doing more and have exciting fundraising plans. Will you help us to raise funds for these pioneering projects? Get in touch to find out how you can help the Giles' Trust.
Together, we want to make a difference. Together, we can save more lives.
The Giles’ Trust Brain Tumour Fund hosts a number of fabulous fundraisers every year – from afternoon teas and golf days to dinners and the much-anticipated black tie annual ball, which takes place every year. Without you, we cannot continue our vital work, it has never been more important for us to keep raising funds to help those brilliant scientists and clinicians complete their work.
Will you help us with our mission? Together, we want to make a difference. Together, we can save more lives.
